"Marquis" is based on the writings of the "Marquis de Sade", and conceived by satirist-caricaturist Roland Topor (the French Jim Henson). Managing to be both visually elegant and wildly raunchy, Jami Bernard of The New York Post says "Marquis" is, "probably the strangest, most imaginatively off-beat film you may see this year." Set in the Bastille prison in 1789 on the eve of the French Revolution, the "Marquis," an aristocratic canine imprisoned for blasphemy, engages Colin, his animated, erect penis, in philosophic debates about art, politics, and sexual freedom. Surrounded by a barnyard cornucopia: the prison governor (a masochistic rooster), his mistress (Juliette, a whip-wielding filly), a lascivious prison guard (a rat) and the victim of a royal rape (Justine, a cow), the "Marquis" is at the center of the storm of the cultural and political revolution.

A rare two-volume translation of Marquis de Sade's titillating and shocking writings, The Complete Marquis de Sade has now been released by Holloway House Publishing in a single trade edition-size volume to commemorate the first printing's 40th anniversary. Adorned with gripping cover art by Man Ray and translated by renowned scholar Dr. Paul J. Gillette, this dramatic collection includes "Justine," "Juliette," "120 Days of Sodom," "Philosophy In the Bedroom," and many other writings often scattered among "pastiche" versions of de Sade's work. The Complete Marquis de Sade is also free of the author's reprtitions, polemics, and syntactically complex 18th century phrases that plague many unedited versions of his writing.
